On Christmas Eve 2020, it snowed overnight leaving a thin blanket of ice over the city of Seattle. I would see this view taking a city train toward downtown and the Olympic Sculpture Park area. The rising sun coming through the clouds would soon melt all of the snow but leave a beautiful glow to the entire city.
In this painting, I wanted to show the reflective nature frozen water can have on a coastal city like Seattle. I wanted to turn the smoke into a fibrous cotton-ball texture coming out of chimneys, industrial heaters, and melting snow. I also wanted to paint motion in warm colors while also contrasting it with static cool colors. It’s a beautiful image to me, but I can’t help but feel the sharpness of the cold on that day now when I see it.
