I have always had a deep appreciation for painting in the rain, observing with fascination as the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation, darkening and taking on a whole new character sometimes in less than 30 minutes. During a plein air class I took in Palo Duro Canyon, I experienced multiple unexpected rain showers. Inspired by this dynamic environment, I started with a simple drawing that eventually evolved into a watercolor painting. To further enhance the piece, I digitized it and utilized modern tools to give it a larger canvas and a renewed life.

In this painting, I drew inspiration from the renowned artist Georgia O’Keeffe, who had once been a professor at my university. While I didn’t want to replicate her work, I sought to infuse my own unique style with elements reminiscent of hers. This piece is my interpretation of her painting “Black Mesa Landscape” from 1941, paying homage to her while incorporating my own artistic voice.
